Being so close to Seattle I am always surprised to not see the same sort of coffee culture that exists only 32 miles north. Tacoma is slow to come up, but there are a few shops that can make you feel like you are in the Emerald City. Sattelite is one of them. This particular one, is very small and looks like an old outpost in Maine. It sports about 7 seats and upon walking in I got the feeling I was the only guy in the room that was not buddies with everyone. A sleeveless 20 year old barista tried selling me a $50 bag of coffee before I even ordered and was shocked when I declined his offer. A good La Marzocca and using the ever so popular Stumptown bean this place will not disappoint if all you are looking for is good coffee. If you are looking for a great place to hang out, this is not it. I would recommend to get your coffee and go, before you end up wasting $50 on some overpriced gold infused Stumptown roast.

Cupcake Royale

Posted on 23 November 2012 by mattbaker

21 Bellevue Way Northeast
Bellevue, WA 98004

Review -

This place has erupted in the last 5 years after the confusing cupcake boom. Opening several spots all over Seattle (West Seattle, Ballard, Medrona, Bellevue.) Depending on the location, it offers a interesting mix of hipsters, cupcake enthusiasts and people on dates. It is the most popular spot to get a cupcake, but certainly not the best in town (that award goest to Trophy Cupcake.) The great part about CR is that they do a fine job with their coffee. They use a Stumptown bean and the usual La Marzocco, they pour a very good shot and chasing the deliciousness with a cupcake is like a little slice of Unicorn vagina…

Stumptown

128 SW 3rd Ave
Portland, OR 97204

Review -

This is the staple and the standard in Portland. Every small coffee shop is fighting a uphill battle over this coffee shop empire. With locations all over Portland, Seattle and even put down roots in Manhattan. You can’t blame them for blowing up like a indie rock band. They roast their own beans, and it is damn good. They use a superior Synnesso machine in all their shops and they have the minimal, hip, indie layout that seems to match the identity of all that is Portland. You will not go wrong with your coffee if you stop in. The food selection is minimal and you might have to wait a little while in line, but you won’t be disappointed. This is the hipster mecca. Be prepared!

Venice Grind

LOS ANGELES, CA 90066

The Venice Grind is the spot. I am so glad I found this place amongst the craziness of Venice Blvd. With an amazing and decked out La Marzocco and a Stumptown bean the barista’s here make your coffee like Walter White makes Meth. It is perfect! This is the kind of attention to detail you wish everyone possessed. The barista smelled, swirled and made sure everything was of the upmost quality before he served me a rosetta dressed latte of goodness. Great art with a Shepard Fairey exhibit up. I have been here twice and can’t get enough of it. They have food and other things available, but who needs that when you got such great coffee.

Northtown Coffee

28 North 1st Street
Yakima, WA 98901

Welcome to the Palm Springs of Washington. Yakima is a interesting town, and was desperate for a solid coffee establishment. Finally Northtown Coffee moved in with some really good coffee. They serve Stumptown coffee and have a very nice La Marzoca which serves some great shots. Sometimes I think their coffee is a little to smooth and does not pack a big enough punch, but this is by far the best place in Yakima. However, it is located in an odd place. I don’t know this to be fact, but I feel like it’s next to a bunch of bail bond places and maybe the county jail. Inside the shop is fine and the ambiance is great, but I would not recommend hanging around outside for to long. I love that you have to go through a shady part of town to get some great coffee. Adds to the adventure more.
