229 Main St
Ames, Iowa 50010

Review -

A giant space in Downtown Ames that seems to be where all the college students journey to get their fix and hit the books. Cool art and seating made me hopeful that they might actually know what they were doing. I remained hopeful even though the first drink I heard called out was, “Salted Caramel Latte.” My hopes started dwindling when I found out they had no 8 oz drink and they cashier say, “people here like sweet drinks.” They had a huge Astoria machine (that I had not seen before) and pumped out a decent drink. A little tart, but good. Definitely not the best in town, but a great place to hang. They also offer breakfast, lunch and very hot baristas.

Located in Downtown Fargo, this place is a writers dream. Lot’s of space, clean, decent light and a lot of interesting people coming and going. Although there was no art on the walls which was a little striking. They have a light food selection to nibble on while you wait for your coffee. They use an organic fair trade bean and is very smooth. It is not as strong as Red Raven, but has some decent flavor. The barista’s are very nice hear. It’s really a flip of the coin on which place is better.

For some odd reason I had high hopes for Olmos Perk. I don’t know why considering it was the highest rated spot on Urbanspoon. I should know better. I was hoping to walk into a hidden gem in San Antonio. It has a sheik feel to it, decorated with leather couches, individual cubicles to work at and great art on the wall. However, the Faema machine they use is complete garbage. They seemed to struggle with the concept that I only wanted a 8 oz drink and made me a 12 oz instead. I don’t know if there was to much milk or if the roast is just weak, but I could not taste the coffee at all. They do have snacks, wine, beer and cool facilities, but there is no reason the coffee should be this bad.

Freemont Coffee Company

This is my favorite spot in Freemont. Located in a old crusty looking house, the Coffee Company thrives by providing not only good coffee, but a good place to study. There are about 3-4 tables in each room and art decorating each room like it would your own home. The coffee is great and the food is very good also. I love this place, but would not recommend it for a social meeting place. The intimacy of each room makes it so that you can be heard clearly pretty much anywhere in the house. It seems most of the time people are busy working and no one really goes there to socialize. If you are looking to bury your face in a laptop or book with some great coffee in Freemont, this is your spot!

I was surprised to really like Grand Forks. A really funky art’s district with this spot right in the heart of it. A cool space, with lot’s of space to spread out and cool art on the walls. Seems like all the cool people in Grand Forks make this their oasis. Located close to the college also, you will find a lot of students burying their faces in books and laptops. The only problem is that the coffee is not that great. They support a very inferior machine and I did not feel the barista really knew what she was doing. Although it is a great place to hang, the coffee is a letdown. I would get some drip and kick it and not waste your money on any espresso.

A friend of mine turned me onto this place on the North end of Commercial Ave. I normally find that people with goofy names for their stores don’t take the coffee to seriously, but this one does. I have seen this place go through a few different changes to accommodate their clientele over the years and everyone has made this place better. A solid La Marzocco machine and a dark roast, their shot’s are strong and very smooth. It’s like drinking sex in your mouth. The atmosphere is designed to be social, with one big table that forces you to sit next and across from people. However, every-time I am in there it is very quite. The owner is lovely and if you want a cool, hip spot to hang this is it.

There was a lot of hype around this place. Everyone in town told me I would like it and it has the look of a great shop. Cool layout, lot’s of interesting people and great light, but the coffee itself did not hold up to the local hype. It was mediocre and not very flavorful. For being a roaster I expect more. They have good food there and is a decent place to hang out. Beware though, they have a “one hour hang policy” that requires you to spend more money if you want to stay longer. I am not a big fan of that, but understand why it exists. I would recommend to go to a different place for coffee, but if you want to hang out in a cool spot for an hour, this will suffice.

The Living Room Coffeehouse

Review -

I think this might be a chain in San Diego, so hopefully this review does not apply to all. The one I stopped at was located in an old house and seemed to be the college student haven. I am not sure why there were so many kids there considering the coffee was so bad. It would have been better if Michael J. Fox made it. They had a decent machine (Simonnelli,) but the barista’s would have been better labeling cans on a factory belt because they really showed no interest in making a good cup of coffee. It being in a house makes it a interesting place, but bad coffee and the smell of ax body spray makes me want to take my business somewhere else.

This is a huge space right in downtown Missoula. It is almost to much space. It feels like if someone is across the room they are in another county. They have 20 ft ceilings, a stage, event guides and a really friendly staff. Not having high expectations after looking at their machine, but they pulled me two decent shots that I was very happy with. This is a great place to be quite and study and that is what most of their customers are doing. OK food, but I would say there has to be a better place in town.

A funky little place on the corner of the main drag. They don’t have the best coffee, but adequate and the atmosphere is pretty fun. Feels like a dark terrariam and has all sorts of nook and cranny’s you can hideout in. Not the greatest selection of food either, but a great place to study and hang out.
