Located right downtown in Wadena this is a huge space on the strip. A really cool space with couches, gaming center, computers on the wall, TV’s and a piano it reminds me of a cyber cafe in Europe. It definitely caters to the teenage demographic and even donate some of their proceeds to teen programs. Could not tell what the machine was, but whatever it was it made some serious garbage coffee. Hopefully they are not serving this to the teens because, they are seriously going to be brought up on drinkable diarrhea. Talking with the barista, he gave me the impression that he knew a little about decent coffee, but when he had to step up to the plate and make some he struck out badly. He steamed my coffee till the sound of the frying milk was so loud I had to plug my ears. Then he filled what was suppose to be my 8 0z drink all the way up to the 12 (the smallest size the have.) It was almost undrinkable and a waste of mouth space. The good part about this place is that it is a cool spot to hang and has a lot of great things you would want in a shop. Coffee is just not one of them.

Located in Downtown Fargo, this place is a writers dream. Lot’s of space, clean, decent light and a lot of interesting people coming and going. Although there was no art on the walls which was a little striking. They have a light food selection to nibble on while you wait for your coffee. They use an organic fair trade bean and is very smooth. It is not as strong as Red Raven, but has some decent flavor. The barista’s are very nice hear. It’s really a flip of the coin on which place is better.

A cool spot located next to a square in San Juan. A shotgun layout attached to a gift shop makes this a unique spot. A steady flux of tourists needing internet and fast speaking locals makes this a cool place to hang. Great art, nice people and decent snacks are the best part of this cafe. Unfortunately the coffee is not that good. Pretty flavorless, milky and hot. For good coffee there is a shop right down on the waterfront to check out. This is better for hanging out though.

This place is as tourist as touristy gets. Right on the corner and conveniently located across the street from the harbor. It’s primarily a Swiss Ice Cream place (which I recommend you trying,) but they do have a nice black La Marzocco machine. Not much of an atmosphere, but the coffee is pretty good. It was presented with a nice heart design, had some decent flavor, but was a little hot. I don’t think you will be disappointed with the coffee, I would just say that there is nothing special about this spot.

Calico Coffee

Thunder Bay, ON P7B 1S1

Review -

Calico seems to be the cool spot where the locals hang. There are three coffee shops in Thunder Bay and they are all located a block from each other. I think Calico is the best of the three. In a dark basement like space, Calico rocks a Elektra machine and makes a decent cup. It is nothing to write home about, but it certainly will do the trick. Cool wooden booths are a long the wall if you want to bury your face and work, or have an intimate conversation. They have snacks, cute barista’s and decent art on the wall. If you are traveling in Ontario, this might be a lagoon in the dessert of nothingness. Check it out.

This was Yelp’s and Urbanspoon’s highest rated shop in Austin and it was the lowest rated of all the places I visited in most of Texas. Smack in the middle of frat row JPS sits. It is littered with terrible art and studying college kids who look like the stumbled out from a giant orgy and plopped down to study. The burnt orange colors they were all wearing did not help my opinion of the situation either. JPS does have a La Marzocco, but did not seem to know how to maximize it. The coffee was too hot, burnt and not very good. They did not have 8 o drinks and charged me $4.00 for a 12 oz latte they were to fill only 8 oz. They filled it to the top of the 12 oz size with a beautiful rosetta, but the damage had been done. Not sure how you can not make the drink we just talked about at length 60 seconds before. Maybe they were to busy focusing on one of the multiple TV’s they have playing everything from MTV to college football games. did not even have a cup for. They have do have beer and if I were you I would not try the coffee, I would try and figure out where the next orgy is happening.

Review -

For some odd reason I had high hopes for Olmos Perk. I don’t know why considering it was the highest rated spot on Urbanspoon. I should know better. I was hoping to walk into a hidden gem in San Antonio. It has a sheik feel to it, decorated with leather couches, individual cubicles to work at and great art on the wall. However, the Faema machine they use is complete garbage. They seemed to struggle with the concept that I only wanted a 8 oz drink and made me a 12 oz instead. I don’t know if there was to much milk or if the roast is just weak, but I could not taste the coffee at all. They do have snacks, wine, beer and cool facilities, but there is no reason the coffee should be this bad.

Who says there is not great things in Burien. Well, I have many times. However, Burien is actually up and coming with some great bars and Restaurants and a fantastic show called Burien Press. With a great Synnesso machine and using a Vita blend they will hold strong even with the likes of the Seattle heavyweights. A cool shop right in the heart of B-Town is also a great place to hang out. With hipster magazines on the wall, lot’s of natural work and a friendly work staff this place is the pride of Burien.

I was actually getting a tattoo next door and smelled some coffee. I walked over after and found this small little cafe. Almost walked out, then became very excited to see a Syneso machine staring back at me. The coffee they roast themselves and are very passionate about it. Telling me all about the day’s blend of Ethiopian and Costa Rican. The flavor of the coffee backed up their attention to detail with wonderful flavors. They did not have any food and the ambiance is pretty bleak, but their coffee was superb.

Caffe Vitta

Review -

Vita has become the standard in Seattle. With multiple locations and many other shops using their beans, they are starting to be mentioned with the likes of Vivace’s in the espresso landscape. I see why. They have everything going for them. Ideal locations, clean/stylized shops and most importantly really good espresso. With every shop rocking a La Marzocco, this place appeals to everyone. Hipsters, goths and preps all frequent Vita shops and make it a diverse spot to hang. My favorite spot is right on Capital Hill and is also their roasting location. This shop is a non-stop people watching spot and even has an upstairs if you want to get some work done.
