A giant space in Downtown Ames that seems to be where all the college students journey to get their fix and hit the books. Cool art and seating made me hopeful that they might actually know what they were doing. I remained hopeful even though the first drink I heard called out was, “Salted Caramel Latte.” My hopes started dwindling when I found out they had no 8 oz drink and they cashier say, “people here like sweet drinks.” They had a huge Astoria machine (that I had not seen before) and pumped out a decent drink. A little tart, but good. Definitely not the best in town, but a great place to hang. They also offer breakfast, lunch and very hot baristas.

A funky spot in the downtown of this really odd town. Maybe it’s odd because the Wizard of Oz was written there, but whatever it is this shop fits the bill. An enormous space that is divided into these sections;1/4 coffee shop, 1/4 imported trinkets, 1/4 used book store and 1/4 magic the gathering players this place is a fun little find in Aberdeen. They have decent food, interesting art and a whacky vibe. They use Just Coffee Coop beans and had a very interesting flavor. Strong, a little bitter, but not bad for the middle of South Dakota. This is your best bet in town. Great hang!

Cottonwood Coffee

Located right on the main strip in this college town, Cottonwood Coffee is a cool little spot. Tons of space to accommodate the numerous amount of students utilizing the free wi-fi, this spot also has cool art on the walls and a great vibe about it. Well decorated, smartly laid out and giant wooden pews make this probably your best bet in town for a cool hang. They serve great food. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich grilled with banana and granola on the inside. Unfortunately the only downfall of this great spot is their coffee. On their site, they said they work hard to provide quality coffee to the town, but it is pretty mediocre. Their smallest size is 12 oz and they don’t have any ceramic mugs to drink out of. A Simonelli machine does not help the cause. Sadly this is your best bet in town for good coffee. On the bright-side, this shop is great and I nice break from all the crappy shops I have been to in South Dakota. At least they care enough to create a shop with a great ambiance.

A cool little spot in downtown Coromandel Town. Chai Tea Lounge has the sort of hippy vibe that always makes a decent shop. A plethora of vegetarian foods and deserts are on display and are even better tasting then they are looking. It’s nice to see a proper coffee shop. In New Zealand so many places are restaurants first and it is cool to see a place solely focus and survive off the coffee. A decent flavor on their drinks, but this is the only game in town. Great seating areas including some outside seating, free wi-fi and the occasional show makes this a must destination on your visit to the Coromandel.

A funky little shop towards the end of Cuba Street, presents a vibe of hip, teenage friendly and late night food. A huge buffet of food is what stand out over everything. Pastries, cakes, sandwiches, pasta’s and salads tower over the counter presenting a great grab and go option. The shop itself is a shotgun layout and decorated with sharpie drawings on the wall and a splattering of show flyers. They use a Wega Machine and the drink came out probably 90 seconds after I ordered it. I was skeptical of how good it would be since it seemed like it was ready before I order it, but it did have good color and a lovely rosetta on top (which was only seen after I pulled the lid off.) However, the drink itself was very potent, strong and a solid drink. Not the best, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is not going to blow you away, but it certainly won’t disappoint. Also, it is nice to see things that are reasonably priced in a land of overpriced things

Crux flat out rocks it. I love this place. It has everything I want in a coffee shop. Great art, lots of space, a stage for shows, lot’s of light, beer, a pool table and above all else amazing coffee. They use a Stumptown bean on a La Marzocco. It seemed to be pretty empty. Maybe Boise has not caught on to the quality they have right in front of them. I just hope this place can survive. It is great. They have a special drink where you drop two shots of espresso into a porter beer. I did not have it, but apparently it is the tasty of the taste. A hipster flip. Well worth the stop when you are driving through Boise.

Columbia River Coffee Roasters

Astoria, OR 97103

Review -

I am so glad that Astoria is finally getting around to stepping up their game on coffee. With the Astoria Coffeehouse already serving up the goods, the Columbia River Coffee Roaster also delivers the delicious. It has a real generic feel to the atmosphere. Not a lot of art and not a lot of interesting things about the layout which makes it feel a little stale. There is a real variety to the sort of people who visit the space. Kids, families and outdoor folks all frequent here to get there jolt. One cool thing is that the roasting happens only 20 feet from the machine. The coffee blend is good and the shots are great. A nice place to stop as you pass on through.

I only heard about this place an hour before I had to leave town, so I did not get a chance to hang out there long. Which really sucks, because I loved it. Really cool place, with lot’s of light, interesting layout and really nice people (I guess that is redundant since we are in Canada.) They have a strong machine, good barista’s and very good coffee. If this was Seattle, it would have a hard time lifting with the heavyweights, but for Saskatoon this is a great choice.

When I found the Bean Scene I was so excited. I was spending a week in Kelowna and it was the hip place and where all the cool kids hung out. With a few locations around town the best one is right downtown. The Bean Scene has a great layout, with awesome art and great people. The food is good, and the coffee is pretty good also. It is nothing special, but I have seen them make a good cup of coffee. It’s less about the coffee in this place and more about the cool hang.

Missoula, MT 59802

Review -

This is a huge space right in downtown Missoula. It is almost to much space. It feels like if someone is across the room they are in another county. They have 20 ft ceilings, a stage, event guides and a really friendly staff. Not having high expectations after looking at their machine, but they pulled me two decent shots that I was very happy with. This is a great place to be quite and study and that is what most of their customers are doing. OK food, but I would say there has to be a better place in town.
