Calico Coffee

316 Bay St
Thunder Bay, ON P7B 1S1

Review -

Calico seems to be the cool spot where the locals hang. There are three coffee shops in Thunder Bay and they are all located a block from each other. I think Calico is the best of the three. In a dark basement like space, Calico rocks a Elektra machine and makes a decent cup. It is nothing to write home about, but it certainly will do the trick. Cool wooden booths are a long the wall if you want to bury your face and work, or have an intimate conversation. They have snacks, cute barista’s and decent art on the wall. If you are traveling in Ontario, this might be a lagoon in the dessert of nothingness. Check it out.

This is by far my favorite place in Seattle. Located on the corner of Pine and Melrose, this place is the perfect glimpse into all things Seattle. A perfect mix of hipsters, students, coffee lovers and weirdo’s. Two levels provides the Bauhaus with a great layout and they pack seats in every nook and cranny of this place. A wall decorated with a giant bookshelf full of old reads and the rest of the place decorated with interesting looking people. The bean they use is very strong and flavorful. Something about it makes me thinks this is the way espresso was made since the caveman days. Not only do they pull a great shot, they also are the only place I have ever seen that sell Ding Dongs. Another great thing about this place is that there is a load of outside seating that you can sit in. Enjoy your espresso and watch the cast of characters that pollute the area.

Night and Day Coffee

Conveniently located on the corner of main street in this sleepy university town. With interesting art on the walls and each table hand painted to advertise a local business this coffee shop is a funky little spot. It also serves as the local health food store, with free range eggs and other healthy supplies to grab with your coffee. The ambiance is almost overkill with the murals but, for a coffee shop in the middle of nowhere this is a great spot to hang. The coffee on the other hand sucks mightily! They actually have “Carmel Latte” and “Vanilla Latte” written on there cool menu board. They even have “House Coffee with flavor shot” above Americano on their menu. A “shot of flavor” sound as appealing as the dog bones they have right next to the register. It’s ok though. This really is a paradise hangout and as long as it is not mandatory to “not” get a flavor shot in my drip then I am ok.

This is a chain in Spokane and has plenty of potential. The food is good, ambiance is better then most, but the coffee is so inconsistant. They have a decent La Marzoca machine, but I feel like there barista’s are not properly trained on pulling a decent shot. My coffee has ranged from pretty good to scorched and undrinkable. Certainly not the best spot in Spokane, but definatley the most hyped. If you are looking for a sandwich and to read, this is your spot.. Don’t expect good coffee.
