This is a hard one to review, because one of the barista’s at this spot is a big fan of my comedy show. So, I will tread lightly. The shop itself is a little hard to find and located within a strip mall. Upon walking in, there was limited seating with one table filled with a women selling art and another housing a guy playing guitar and singing loudly like we would be missing out if we did not hear him. The vibe of the shop struck me as a little more vagabond then most and felt it belonged in Eugene Oregon. I was excited to see the La Marzocco machine, but taken back a little when they asked if I wanted flavor in my latte. On top of that, no 8 oz cup. The final product did not have the greatest color and the flavor was a little hard to find. Maybe it was my tastebuds that day, but I sweat I could not actually taste the coffee. I think this would be a cool place to hang if there wasn’t some guitar guy belting away songs he uses to try and melt chicks panties off with.

I know better by excited for coffee shops based off their name, but I have to admit I was a little intrigued to see this on the corner of main street. From the outside, it looked like it might be one of those rare cool coffee shops in a state littered with nothing. After struggling to find the entrance and then realizing I have to go into a small shopping mall even to get in to the place, my positive sentiment quickly dissipated. A huge space, but littered with old folks, odd non-coffee items for sale and a stuffy barista was what greeted me and that was the good things about it. The coffee was bad. I would say, get some drip and one of their sandwiches and use the space to work. That is probably the best case scenario for this joint.

Located right downtown in Wadena this is a huge space on the strip. A really cool space with couches, gaming center, computers on the wall, TV’s and a piano it reminds me of a cyber cafe in Europe. It definitely caters to the teenage demographic and even donate some of their proceeds to teen programs. Could not tell what the machine was, but whatever it was it made some serious garbage coffee. Hopefully they are not serving this to the teens because, they are seriously going to be brought up on drinkable diarrhea. Talking with the barista, he gave me the impression that he knew a little about decent coffee, but when he had to step up to the plate and make some he struck out badly. He steamed my coffee till the sound of the frying milk was so loud I had to plug my ears. Then he filled what was suppose to be my 8 0z drink all the way up to the 12 (the smallest size the have.) It was almost undrinkable and a waste of mouth space. The good part about this place is that it is a cool spot to hang and has a lot of great things you would want in a shop. Coffee is just not one of them.

Located in Downtown Fargo, this place is a writers dream. Lot’s of space, clean, decent light and a lot of interesting people coming and going. Although there was no art on the walls which was a little striking. They have a light food selection to nibble on while you wait for your coffee. They use an organic fair trade bean and is very smooth. It is not as strong as Red Raven, but has some decent flavor. The barista’s are very nice hear. It’s really a flip of the coin on which place is better.

A funky spot in the downtown of this really odd town. Maybe it’s odd because the Wizard of Oz was written there, but whatever it is this shop fits the bill. An enormous space that is divided into these sections;1/4 coffee shop, 1/4 imported trinkets, 1/4 used book store and 1/4 magic the gathering players this place is a fun little find in Aberdeen. They have decent food, interesting art and a whacky vibe. They use Just Coffee Coop beans and had a very interesting flavor. Strong, a little bitter, but not bad for the middle of South Dakota. This is your best bet in town. Great hang!

A cool spot located next to a square in San Juan. A shotgun layout attached to a gift shop makes this a unique spot. A steady flux of tourists needing internet and fast speaking locals makes this a cool place to hang. Great art, nice people and decent snacks are the best part of this cafe. Unfortunately the coffee is not that good. Pretty flavorless, milky and hot. For good coffee there is a shop right down on the waterfront to check out. This is better for hanging out though.

When I heard about The Mod I became excited. I imagined a place with vespa’s parked outside, The Smiths playing inside and the local artist meeting place. Definitely not the case. The Mod is nice and certainly the best bet in the very confusing town of Galveston. A interesting clientele. Locals mixed with cruise ship passengers makes this a distant and friendly place. A cool brick interior decorated with interesting art on the walls. Sweet snacks, tea, wine are all served at the Mod. I forgot to jot down their machine, because I was to busy writing down their scary names for their coffee concoctions, A grasshopper, Almond Joy and Honeybee to name a few. I have to admit that this was the first time I had ever seen a Hello Kitty tattoo on a man, as he slammed my drink on the counter. The coffee was well over the 8 oz I requested and hotter then Mila Kunis eating ice cream. If this wasn’t the only game in town, I would not go here, but it is your only bet. It is a cool place, just not the best coffee.

There are not a whole lot of options in St. Thomas, and this is probably your best bet. A funky little spot that houses a healthy mix of locals and cruise ship staff catching up on their e-mail, Barefoot Buddha is trying it’s best to be great. A great menu of healthy food like a Kale Smoothie and delicious baked goods. A cool laid back feel with air conditioning inside and shaded seats outside makes this a great spot to spend an hour or two and work. I wish the coffee was as good as the ambiance. They use a organic fair trade bean and serve it up on a cool gold pull machine, but no matter what you order, it only comes in one size HUGE! They do offer cubano’s and Mocha Borgio (Mocha with Orange,) but what is the point when it is coming in a cup 12 oz to much. That being said, this is probably your best bet for coffee. I would probably go with drip and chill out with some food, get some gifts from the gift shop attached to it, but stick with the drip to make the coffee experience a little more enjoyable.

Review -

This was Yelp’s and Urbanspoon’s highest rated shop in Austin and it was the lowest rated of all the places I visited in most of Texas. Smack in the middle of frat row JPS sits. It is littered with terrible art and studying college kids who look like the stumbled out from a giant orgy and plopped down to study. The burnt orange colors they were all wearing did not help my opinion of the situation either. JPS does have a La Marzocco, but did not seem to know how to maximize it. The coffee was too hot, burnt and not very good. They did not have 8 o drinks and charged me $4.00 for a 12 oz latte they were to fill only 8 oz. They filled it to the top of the 12 oz size with a beautiful rosetta, but the damage had been done. Not sure how you can not make the drink we just talked about at length 60 seconds before. Maybe they were to busy focusing on one of the multiple TV’s they have playing everything from MTV to college football games. did not even have a cup for. They have do have beer and if I were you I would not try the coffee, I would try and figure out where the next orgy is happening.

For some odd reason I had high hopes for Olmos Perk. I don’t know why considering it was the highest rated spot on Urbanspoon. I should know better. I was hoping to walk into a hidden gem in San Antonio. It has a sheik feel to it, decorated with leather couches, individual cubicles to work at and great art on the wall. However, the Faema machine they use is complete garbage. They seemed to struggle with the concept that I only wanted a 8 oz drink and made me a 12 oz instead. I don’t know if there was to much milk or if the roast is just weak, but I could not taste the coffee at all. They do have snacks, wine, beer and cool facilities, but there is no reason the coffee should be this bad.
