One of the biggest roasters in NZ, I visited the Ponsonby shop. I don’t think they roast there, because the size is so small, but this is a cool little spot. With only three seats and a small assortment of treats it seems like they just want to serve you and get you the hell out. A really cool La Marzocco with a mirror behind the barista allows you to watch as they make your drink. She put a lid on my drink without asking making the presentation a little anticlimactic, but the coffee was pretty good and had some decent bite to it. I was expecting a little more from a shop that provides beans to all the major espresso players in NZ, but comparatively speaking to most shops this is pretty good. Get a cup and walk the cool row of Ponsonby shops!

Crema is an interesting little shop located not far from Jack White’s recording studio. When I walked in it had a funky smell of old cheese and feet. It has a feel of a old garage with exposed pipes and big windows with a cool view looking out over the stadium. They do roast on location and offer siphon, pour over and food. They rock a small La Marzocco and serve up a smooth and tasty drink. I really liked hanging out there and working with a stream of attractive people coming in and out. If you can’t get over the Barista Parlor, this is probably your best bet.

This is a cool little spot located in Echo Park. It has delicious baked good out the yin yang to choose from and a little seating area to enjoy them. Not much for atmosphere, but maintains a healthy flow of beautiful people coming and going. A Strada Machine that highlights the quality Four Barrel Coffee they use. The coffee was smooth with good color, but just lacked a little bite. It was almost too smooth for my taste. I like to have the flavor explode in my mouth, and this was just lacked that little extra spark. Solid coffee anywhere else, but not going to knock your sunglasses off.

Being so close to Seattle I am always surprised to not see the same sort of coffee culture that exists only 32 miles north. Tacoma is slow to come up, but there are a few shops that can make you feel like you are in the Emerald City. Sattelite is one of them. This particular one, is very small and looks like an old outpost in Maine. It sports about 7 seats and upon walking in I got the feeling I was the only guy in the room that was not buddies with everyone. A sleeveless 20 year old barista tried selling me a $50 bag of coffee before I even ordered and was shocked when I declined his offer. A good La Marzocca and using the ever so popular Stumptown bean this place will not disappoint if all you are looking for is good coffee. If you are looking for a great place to hang out, this is not it. I would recommend to get your coffee and go, before you end up wasting $50 on some overpriced gold infused Stumptown roast.

Cafe Cola’D claims to be the best coffee in town and from what I have tasted they are right. A little shop right at the cruise ship terminal makes this place look a little touristy, but it does not matter. Catering to both locals and tourists, this little shop serves up the delicious like the best of them. Serving beans grown right there on the island and making it on a slick La Marzocco, there coffee is smooth, not to bitter and has some great flavor. Offering hot and cold drinks and a small seating area to sit and enjoy, Cafe Cola’D know what they are doing and you are not going to want to miss them.

Intelligentsia is a fun and amazing espresso shop. There are a few around LA, but my favorite is in Venice. When I am in LA I always make an effort to stop in on the Venice spot. It’s a little over the hipster top for me, but I get it. They want to make you feel like they are a European hipster espresso scientist that know more about espresso then anyone in the entire world. The shop has a very unique layout. The bar is a circle in the middle of the room with what seems to be 10 people working behind. There are multiple machines around the bar, you are pointed to one of the espresso stations for a one on one interaction with one of the baristas. They present it to you like a piece of art and take your. The shop moves like a finely tuned machine. Regardless of the awkwardness the system might create, the coffee does not let you down. A amazing blend with bold flavors and a cup that goes down so smooth, you almost are sad when it is gone. I had a very hard time with the internet, but I am glad because the people watching is so much better then who likes my facebook status. This is a must-do stop on your coffee adventure in LA-LA Land.

This is a lunch cafe, espresso bar and art gallery right in the heart of downtown Salt Ste Marie. The food was very good, the art was very sub-par and the coffee was ok. They use an Evolution machine, which I have never heard of, but they told me three times it was Italian. I am not sure whey that makes a difference, but with the amount of Online Pokies emphasis they put on the fact that it was “Italian” I guess I was expecting the espresso to be majestical. It was not. The best I found in town, but a little above mediocre. Cool place to hang and the owner is very sweet. Just beware that this place is very quant and will win your heart over if you hang for more then an hour.

I was very surprised to see a La Marzocco in the window of this small shop. They did not disappoint either. The coffee was great and the staff was very nice and very knowledgable of where their beans come from. This place has a feel of a tea room with great pastries and a very quaint atmosphere. Unfortunately there is no internet, but if you are looking for a great cup of coffee you have landed in the bomb-zone.

This is a small little place, but is your best bet for a good place to hang out. Off the main strip, but still centrally located and easy to find. Great art, nice people and big windows looking out at the tourists as they shuffle by. Sadly, there coffee is not great, but is good enough to get you by the lack of good coffee in Wyoming.

I always stop at Pioneer when I am traveling through and am rarely dissapointed. Even though they have a rotating cast of barista’s, they all seem to pull great shots and I always leave glad that there is good coffee in such a small town. They roast their beans right in the shop and have halfway decent food. The ambiance is a little odd. I always feel like I am intruding on a yuppy convention. It seems to bring in older white folks who seem disgruntled and snobbish. Screw them! I get my coffee to go. For your sanity, I would not reccommend staying long.
