A giant space in Downtown Ames that seems to be where all the college students journey to get their fix and hit the books. Cool art and seating made me hopeful that they might actually know what they were doing. I remained hopeful even though the first drink I heard called out was, “Salted Caramel Latte.” My hopes started dwindling when I found out they had no 8 oz drink and they cashier say, “people here like sweet drinks.” They had a huge Astoria machine (that I had not seen before) and pumped out a decent drink. A little tart, but good. Definitely not the best in town, but a great place to hang. They also offer breakfast, lunch and very hot baristas.

So excited to find this place start up in-between my 5 year layoff from visiting Juneau. A cool spot centrally located (virtually everything is in Juneau) with a long table down the center that accommodates the alarming amount of cruise ship people needing free internet. The art on the wall is minimal, but the wall paper is very cool with stenciled trees and crows and a huge mural above the bar, making this place great on the eyes. Even better for the eyes, is when I saw the La Marzocco machine and Stumptown coffee signage. However, I was confused when they did not have an 8 oz cup on the menu, and I had to specifically ask for it. The coffee itself had good color, with a small rosetta, but was to hot and the flavor was really disappointing. Very weak cup considering that they have all the right things in place to make a killer drink. At the very least, it was drinkable and accompanied with one of the delicious pastries they sell, it turned out to be a very good experience. They also have light lunch stuff like soup, pie, pastries, sandwiches and beer on tap. Great to see that quality coffee has made it’s way up to the last frontier. Can’t wait till they hammer out the kinks.

I have no idea how I ended up here, but I did and here are the things I experienced. First, this place is broken up into many different rooms that are not even attached to the actual shop. It felt like a giant complex of funky art, pizza and trekkies. They use a Simonelli machine and their smallest size was a 16 0z. After a long conversation on how I wanted them to fill the 16 oz cup 1/2 way. It seemed to blow her mind to be honest. It was like watching a Neanderthal learning how the internet works. After a 5 minute explanation, I received a full 16 0z blazing hot latte. I don’t understand how in 30 seconds you can forget exactly what a person wants. The coffee was shit and I would say avoid this place like syphilis.

If you love Mexican styled coffee shops in Minnesota this is your spot. Decorated like a villa on the Gulf of Mexico with paintings of Conquistador’s and pastel flowers, this place is huge. Food, wi-fi, fireplace, computers are all offered here. They roast on site with a Diedrich Roaster and use a Cembali Machine. The coffee was ok. It had some decent flavor, good color, but the fact they don’t serve 8 0z and the coffee was a little hot, made it kind of a let down. Great place to hang though.

This place is located in Old Town Newport and is right across the street from where you can hear the Sea Lions causing all sorts of commotion. They use McLaughlin Coffee and a Le Grand Danieli machine. They don’t have wi-fi, but serve some great food. It’s more of a cafe then a coffee shop. It took probably 15 minutes for me to get my coffee, I think because it is really busy, and there are only two dudes working there. The space is very nice with an all wood interior and a fishing shack feel to it. The coffee was very poor and very bitter. I would go with drip or pour over, or just get food and try a different spot.

Located in Downtown Fargo, this place is a writers dream. Lot’s of space, clean, decent light and a lot of interesting people coming and going. Although there was no art on the walls which was a little striking. They have a light food selection to nibble on while you wait for your coffee. They use an organic fair trade bean and is very smooth. It is not as strong as Red Raven, but has some decent flavor. The barista’s are very nice hear. It’s really a flip of the coin on which place is better.

A funky spot in the downtown of this really odd town. Maybe it’s odd because the Wizard of Oz was written there, but whatever it is this shop fits the bill. An enormous space that is divided into these sections;1/4 coffee shop, 1/4 imported trinkets, 1/4 used book store and 1/4 magic the gathering players this place is a fun little find in Aberdeen. They have decent food, interesting art and a whacky vibe. They use Just Coffee Coop beans and had a very interesting flavor. Strong, a little bitter, but not bad for the middle of South Dakota. This is your best bet in town. Great hang!

A cool spot located next to a square in San Juan. A shotgun layout attached to a gift shop makes this a unique spot. A steady flux of tourists needing internet and fast speaking locals makes this a cool place to hang. Great art, nice people and decent snacks are the best part of this cafe. Unfortunately the coffee is not that good. Pretty flavorless, milky and hot. For good coffee there is a shop right down on the waterfront to check out. This is better for hanging out though.

Located right on the main strip in this college town, Cottonwood Coffee is a cool little spot. Tons of space to accommodate the numerous amount of students utilizing the free wi-fi, this spot also has cool art on the walls and a great vibe about it. Well decorated, smartly laid out and giant wooden pews make this probably your best bet in town for a cool hang. They serve great food. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich grilled with banana and granola on the inside. Unfortunately the only downfall of this great spot is their coffee. On their site, they said they work hard to provide quality coffee to the town, but it is pretty mediocre. Their smallest size is 12 oz and they don’t have any ceramic mugs to drink out of. A Simonelli machine does not help the cause. Sadly this is your best bet in town for good coffee. On the bright-side, this shop is great and I nice break from all the crappy shops I have been to in South Dakota. At least they care enough to create a shop with a great ambiance.

This was highly recommended to me, but I was confused on why. This is a restaurant that also has a coffee counter. Decorated in army parachutes and camouflage everything this tribute to Cuba has tons of space and is constantly packed with hipsters. The staff was very friendly and nice and their food is great. It is not really set up for you to get you coffee and sit down (unless you are eating food) although if you are getting your coffee to go, they do have a large assortment of baked goods to take away with you. A good La Marzocco produced a nice cup with a light flavor to it. It was good, I just did not understand all the hype about it. Only two blocks away there is a shop that blows your mind and focuses just on coffee. Get some food here.

When I heard about The Mod I became excited. I imagined a place with vespa’s parked outside, The Smiths playing inside and the local artist meeting place. Definitely not the case. The Mod is nice and certainly the best bet in the very confusing town of Galveston. A interesting clientele. Locals mixed with cruise ship passengers makes this a distant and friendly place. A cool brick interior decorated with interesting art on the walls. Sweet snacks, tea, wine are all served at the Mod. I forgot to jot down their machine, because I was to busy writing down their scary names for their coffee concoctions, A grasshopper, Almond Joy and Honeybee to name a few. I have to admit that this was the first time I had ever seen a Hello Kitty tattoo on a man, as he slammed my drink on the counter. The coffee was well over the 8 oz I requested and hotter then Mila Kunis eating ice cream. If this wasn’t the only game in town, I would not go here, but it is your only bet. It is a cool place, just not the best coffee.
