90 Abel Smith St Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand

My favorite place in Wellington hands down. One of a handful of shops in New Zealand that actually focus on espresso! A small shop off the beaten path, with limited seating and a very industrial design. Big ass glass windows looking over the road and into their roasting area where you can watch the magic happen. It’s cement interior gives you a real feel that they are not their to produce crap, but some science students who rented whatever space they could to make the best espresso. It has limited seating, but that don’t matter because you are going to be jumping up and down this place is so good! A sexy black La Marzocco on display with a small assortment of high end baked goods next to it. The coffee was superb. Great flavor, with very bold notes, great color and when touching my lips I could feel my feet tingle a little. This is the #1 spot to go of all the places I tried in Wellington. They also offer a chemex option.. This is your spot..

Their coffee is used all over Wellington and I was extremely excited to visit their shop/roasting location in Wellington. A really cool shop with custom wood interior a tasting room and a few spots to sit and enjoy. Smack in the middle is there large Probat roaster showing off like some grand champion horse. They use a direct trade bean and the owner is very knowledgable and friendly explaining the process of how they get their beans. I was a little surprised to see that they use a Slayer Machine, but the owner swore by it, so I was onboard. Upon my order I watched them throw 6 shots away before they served me a drink that was to hot. I really Pokies appreciate the fact that they would not serve me something they did not think was high quality, but on the flip-side, why did it take 6 different pulls to get something good? I would expect something better from the 2011 3rd place finisher in the world barista championships. The presentation was beautiful, but it was to hot and the coffee was to smooth. It was honestly like drinking air. I like my coffee to have some bite, and this did not. They coffee is to well done for their own good. Great place to visit on your coffee spot. Especially if you want to really experience some of the upper crust of coffee companies.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan

I am not sure how much specialty coffee has caught on in Tokyo, but this place knows what’s up. I was so excited when I walked into the shop and saw a huge, beautiful white La Marzocco machine. With many locations around Tokyo, this place will give you exactly what you are looking for. They pull a mean shot with great flavor and pour you a cup with a rosetta right on top. A great assortment of pastries, snacks and weird Japanese snacks decorate the spaces next to the register. Surprisingly everything is reasonably priced for somewhere in Tokyo. Tokyo is known for being very expensive, but this place is the same price any coffee shop in the states.

I was very surprised to see a La Marzocco in the window of this small shop. They did not disappoint either. The coffee was great and the staff was very nice and very knowledgable of where their beans come from. This place has a feel of a tea room with great pastries and a very quaint atmosphere. Unfortunately there is no internet, but if you are looking for a great cup of coffee you have landed in the bomb-zone.

Urbanspoon did not even have this listed, and Yelp had it ranked low, but they have no clue what the hell they are talking about. The Hub, is by far the the best coffee shop in town (see my review on Urbanspoons highest rated shop Scenic Brew.) The hub is hip, has lots of locals hanging, cool art and GREAT COFFEE. They have a slick La Marzoca and the quality coffee is hands down the tastiest in Helena. They gave me a nice rosetta in my 8 oz latte and it was not even overpriced (like everything else in Montana is.) This is the spot to hang and enrich you palettes.

LAMILL is nestled in a convenient spot in the hipster haven of Silver Lake. Let’s face it, if you are a coffee aficionado, this is a must stop along your coffee life path. With a gold plated La Marzocco and a culture that makes you feel like coffee is what is really important in the universe this place delivers on multiple levels. The food is fantastic and the culture is what every coffee shop should be. If you have your coffee in, they seat you and serve you up one of the dozens of fantastic drinks they offer. A simple layout, with a murals of ancient Greece decorating the walls, LAMILL is setting the bar high for all coffee shops in Silver Lake. This is a “All System Must Go.”

A interesting little place that also is a bakery. Although they were all out of baked goods when I arrived, the atmosphere was cool. Hard to not overhear every conversation in the place, but since it is in the living room of an old house, I think that is the point. Everyone seemed to know each other and are very friendly to strangers. The coffee was ok and nothing to rave about, but a cool place to visit none the less.

When I walked in I was not clear on if it was a coffee shop or a restaurant. Turns out it is both. A little hole in the wall across the street from a more popular coffee shop, but this is the better of the two. A small La Marzocco and a barista from Seattle left me with a tasty little drink that shattered my expectations. I did not try and food, but it looked good and based off the people next to me chomping super loud, it sounded good. Felt like a arty back alley coffee shop in San Francisco with limited seating, but lots of spunk.

This is a little hole in the wall and is great place to grab a cup. It seats about 10 people and the owner is friendly and very knowledgable about the coffee. The sport a small La Marzoca and use the Cafe Vitta roast. Certainly a little more challenging to get to, but will worth the mini trek. I have a few espresso’s and latte’s from here and have only had one that I was disappointed in. I would not go there if you are looking to study or work. The small nature of the cafe makes it impossible not to eavesdrop on every conversation, but if you are looking to get some solid coffee and move on this is a safe bet.
