Located in Old Town Pierre (everything looks like old town,) This coffee shop/bakery/bar is funky. A shotgun layout and a collage of different personalities as the patrons Pier 347 has something for everyone. Bagels and sandwiches if you are hungry, coffee for the people on the move and alcohol for the people trying to drown their daddy issues. Coffee wise, they serve Dark Canyon Coffee on a Rancilio machine and don’t have anything smaller then a 12 oz cup. After many discussion on what 8 oz of liquid looks like in a cup, she served me my drink and said, “It’s more like 8 1/2 oz’s.” In truth, it was more like 11 oz’s. Made way to hot, but since they made it in 24 seconds, it’s hard to expect quality. Calling it drinkable is polite and tasted more like a 75 year old dirty diaper. Good think they have tequila to wash this taste out of my mouth.

A funky spot in the downtown of this really odd town. Maybe it’s odd because the Wizard of Oz was written there, but whatever it is this shop fits the bill. An enormous space that is divided into these sections;1/4 coffee shop, 1/4 imported trinkets, 1/4 used book store and 1/4 magic the gathering players this place is a fun little find in Aberdeen. They have decent food, interesting art and a whacky vibe. They use Just Coffee Coop beans and had a very interesting flavor. Strong, a little bitter, but not bad for the middle of South Dakota. This is your best bet in town. Great hang!

The highest rated spot on Yelp and again that site leads people astray. A fudge shop that also serves espresso this place kind of blows. A really forced ambiance with generic colors and interior really matches the strip mall in which it is located in. WIth the feeling of an old lady church feeling, this is not the spot to come. Unless you like fudge, because they have a shit-load of it. They have two La Cimbali machines which are in pristine condition and look like they hardly get used. My coffee was pretty milky, flavorless and throw up color. They do have free wi-fi, which is nice, but if you drive two miles to downtown you can get a cool shop and free wi-fi in Cottonwood Coffee (which isn’t even listed on Yelp.) Stay away!

Cottonwood Coffee

Located right on the main strip in this college town, Cottonwood Coffee is a cool little spot. Tons of space to accommodate the numerous amount of students utilizing the free wi-fi, this spot also has cool art on the walls and a great vibe about it. Well decorated, smartly laid out and giant wooden pews make this probably your best bet in town for a cool hang. They serve great food. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich grilled with banana and granola on the inside. Unfortunately the only downfall of this great spot is their coffee. On their site, they said they work hard to provide quality coffee to the town, but it is pretty mediocre. Their smallest size is 12 oz and they don’t have any ceramic mugs to drink out of. A Simonelli machine does not help the cause. Sadly this is your best bet in town for good coffee. On the bright-side, this shop is great and I nice break from all the crappy shops I have been to in South Dakota. At least they care enough to create a shop with a great ambiance.

Aroma Coffee is formally Coffee Tree and I am glad they changed the name. Coffee Tree sounds like somewhere where you can get all your coffee for under a $1.00. Aroma is a little off the main strip and has a very nice feel to it. I think they are going for an upper class sheik, but who are we kidding? We are in Huron South Dakota! They have a Simonelli machine and their coffee was ok at best. However they do have decent food, wine and a nice atmosphere to work in. Gonna be the best place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee before you hurry off to see Huron’s claim to fame the World’s Largest Pheasant!

Review -

Huron is a very small town and does not really need another shop in it. However, Spill the Beans is conveniently located on the main street stuck in an odd shopping complex. The first time I came to this shop I literally stood for 10 minutes at the counter and no one showed up to help me, so I left. I wanted to give it another shot, but wish I didn’t. The shop is nice and clean with a steady stream of old ladies and babies having there lunch time chat. A single group rancillio that looks like it has never been used. The coffee was not very good and the woman took way to long to make it. Your best bet is to get some decent food here and move on to one of the other two shops in town.

I have no idea why I stopped in this town while driving, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this place. The town has no stoplight and looks like it is about to become a ghost town, but Higher Ground helps you forget about the baron wasteland outside. A comfy little spot with a fireplace, clean interior and cool ladies running it. Kind of feels like your grandma’s shop. Their machine looks like it is from Toys ‘R’ Us, so your best bet is to get some drip. However, they have free wi-fi, baked goods, local art and heat. A nice little spot to stop if you are passing thru.

Ok. You are in Huron.. Breathe.. I don’t really want to know why, but first off, I am sorry. There are three shops in town and the best one is this one. Blackbird Coffeehouse. The name is a little misleading because it is not a coffeehouse, it is a a bloody drive thru. Because it is vehicles only, the ambiance leaves a little something to be desired. They have a Rancilio machine and she was a little confused at my drink, but she did have 8 oz cups and even little machiatto cups. She said she bought them because “Father Brian” likes them. The coffee’s flavor seems a little burned, but still has some bite and flavor. Get your coffee and get the hell out of that town!
