This place is not a shack, but an overpriced restaurant that serves espresso. Serving mostly tourists, this place serves Rocket Coffee and has decorated their seating with coffee bags. I was excited to see a La Marzocco and the coffee had great color, but no potency. It tasted like coffee flavored milk. Not sure I could not taste it, maybe I had to pay extra for the “taste feature.” Cool art, but go across the street to the Ragland Roast.

I was super stoked about this spot. It is located in a shipping container on the top of a hill. It has a cool outside seating area with some picnic benches and garden area. They have a cool green La Marzocco and upon approach I thought this was the spot. However, the coffee just like every other place was just “pretty good.” Anywhere else in the world, I would be stoked to have this coffee, but in Auckland where everyone and there mother owns a La Marzocco, the quest for the best cup does not stop here.

A cute little shop not far from the Art Museum. Littered with books, backpackers and people on laptops this cool spot has the best prices in overpriced Auckland. $3.50 for my piccolo latte which they made on their La Cimbali machine. It was just ok flavored, but they do use fair trade coffee and are very friendly. Check it out and you might even be able to pick up a hitchhiker while you are at it.

This place is as tourist as touristy gets. Right on the corner and conveniently located across the street from the harbor. It’s primarily a Swiss Ice Cream place (which I recommend you trying,) but they do have a nice black La Marzocco machine. Not much of an atmosphere, but the coffee is pretty good. It was presented with a nice heart design, had some decent flavor, but was a little hot. I don’t think you will be disappointed with the coffee, I would just say that there is nothing special about this spot.

Merito is a small little shop with no more then 5 seats. They do have a La Marzocco and don’t mess around. They do have a few snacks, but coffee is the focus here. This was only my second drink in New Zealand and was shocked at the $4.70 for a latte. For that price I was very underwhelmed with the drink. It had a little flavor, but for the attitude they served me I was hoping for something amazing.

A cool little spot in downtown Coromandel Town. Chai Tea Lounge has the sort of hippy vibe that always makes a decent shop. A plethora of vegetarian foods and deserts are on display and are even better tasting then they are looking. It’s nice to see a proper coffee shop. In New Zealand so many places are restaurants first and it is cool to see a place solely focus and survive off the coffee. A decent flavor on their drinks, but this is the only game in town. Great seating areas including some outside seating, free wi-fi and the occasional show makes this a must destination on your visit to the Coromandel.

One of the biggest roasters in NZ, I visited the Ponsonby shop. I don’t think they roast there, because the size is so small, but this is a cool little spot. With only three seats and a small assortment of treats it seems like they just want to serve you and get you the hell out. A really cool La Marzocco with a mirror behind the barista allows you to watch as they make your drink. She put a lid on my drink without asking making the presentation a little anticlimactic, but the coffee was pretty good and had some decent bite to it. I was expecting a little more from a shop that provides beans to all the major espresso players in NZ, but comparatively speaking to most shops this is pretty good. Get a cup and walk the cool row of Ponsonby shops!

This is a cool spot on the top of the strip at the Auckland getaway of Devenport. A cafe with food, treats and wine supports a fun looking clientele. A beautiful red La Marzocco served up a cup that even though it was to hot, had great color and flavor. For being as bitter of a bean as it is, it has a lot of bite and has very good taste. The food is very good also. There is roaster a few blocks away, but I got there long after they had closed for the day. Try them first, and then stop in here for some food and a good cup after.

With a feel of hollywood this outdoor cafe is trendy, sheik and the clientele looks like they are straight out of a hollywood production. A beautiful view of the water this place is a restaurant and also has a separate coffee shop adjacent to it. The restaurant is extremely pricy as is the coffee ($5 for a 8 oz double latte,) but it was great! A huge La Marzocco, All Press bean proved to be some of the best I have had in Auckland. Strong flavor, great color I actually had to go back for seconds I was so impressed. If you are willing to throw some coin down, get some food and top it off with some delicious espresso. Your pocketbook will hurt, but your tastebuds won’t.

A funky little shop towards the end of Cuba Street, presents a vibe of hip, teenage friendly and late night food. A huge buffet of food is what stand out over everything. Pastries, cakes, sandwiches, pasta’s and salads tower over the counter presenting a great grab and go option. The shop itself is a shotgun layout and decorated with sharpie drawings on the wall and a splattering of show flyers. They use a Wega Machine and the drink came out probably 90 seconds after I ordered it. I was skeptical of how good it would be since it seemed like it was ready before I order it, but it did have good color and a lovely rosetta on top (which was only seen after I pulled the lid off.) However, the drink itself was very potent, strong and a solid drink. Not the best, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is not going to blow you away, but it certainly won’t disappoint. Also, it is nice to see things that are reasonably priced in a land of overpriced things
