A friend of mine turned me onto this place on the North end of Commercial Ave. I normally find that people with goofy names for their stores don’t take the coffee to seriously, but this one does. I have seen this place go through a few different changes to accommodate their clientele over the years and everyone has made this place better. A solid La Marzocco machine and a dark roast, their shot’s are strong and very smooth. It’s like drinking sex in your mouth. The atmosphere is designed to be social, with one big table that forces you to sit next and across from people. However, every-time I am in there it is very quite. The owner is lovely and if you want a cool, hip spot to hang this is it.

Turks Coffee Exchange

I have a real love hate relationship with Turks. It is a funky little spot that has a very unique customer base, but the coffee is so inconsistent. I have had really great coffee here, but also a few liquid debacles. It seems like there is no rhyme or reason behind the wide range of quality either. It is a cool place to hang, with fun people watching and is open pretty late. However, it is a roll of the dice on the coffee, but if you roll enough you are sure to get a really good cup sometime.

This place was an exciting find. It does not have a lot of signage on the front, just like every minimal hipster place. That is exactly what it is. A hipster mecca! It seems like they transplanted a shop out of Portland or New York and plopped it down on the south end of Commercial Ave. It has no real art on the walls, and very plain design with lot’s of natural light. They have a very impressive La Marzcocca and the coffee is great! I have never been disappointed with the coffee and every barista seems to be on their shit. If you can handle the hipsterness and don’t want to talk to anybody then this is a awesome place.

A real awesome place on the corner of a block full of great shops and restaurants. It is the pointy part of a triangle shaped building and is a unique place to hang. A lot of hipsters kicking it, a lot of natural light that allows the hipsters to keep their sunglasses on while they hang out. Not a lot of places to sit, but the coffee is delicious. They have a fancy La Marzoca and lay down the goods on every drink I have ever ordered there.

Recently moved to a new location Elixir Coffee new location suits it a lot more then it’s old spot. The new shop is now on a very small, narrow street and is the space is amazing. Interestingly decorated with terrariums, beautiful wood floors and some funky jazz playing it makes you feel like you walked into an Urban Outfitters. With a La Marzocco machine, I thought to myself “this is the perfect spot.” It has it all! Great atmosphere, internet, snacks and the decor of a hipster palace, but the coffee fell a little flat. I was corrected and was told that an 8 oz latte is called a “Cappuccino.” No matter if it was a Latte or a Cappuccino I thought the coffee was a little weak. Overall it is quality and they know what they are doing. However out of all the places that have the knowledge of quality, I think they need to get a better flavor of bean to be considered the best of the best. Great spot, and a hip oasis from the bustling streets of Philly.

Half restaurant and half coffee shop this place rocks. With a small La Marzocco, Pure Fare has the care for the coffee and it shows in the flavor. My 8oz Latte order was corrected to actually be a “Cappuccino,” but they delivered a cup with beautiful color and taste. Not only do they rock a great cup, but the have some delicious foods that give you an all around great experience. Smoothies, salads, sandwiches and Burmese papaya salad make this a one stop shop of delicious. Not the greatest place to hang although the do have one giant table with some very addicting swivel seats, but cool enough to have lunch and move on.

Columbia River Coffee Roasters

I am so glad that Astoria is finally getting around to stepping up their game on coffee. With the Astoria Coffeehouse already serving up the goods, the Columbia River Coffee Roaster also delivers the delicious. It has a real generic feel to the atmosphere. Not a lot of art and not a lot of interesting things about the layout which makes it feel a little stale. There is a real variety to the sort of people who visit the space. Kids, families and outdoor folks all frequent here to get there jolt. One cool thing is that the roasting happens only 20 feet from the machine. The coffee blend is good and the shots are great. A nice place to stop as you pass on through.

Astoria Coffeehouse and Bistro

This is a hidden gem in the heart of the beat up downtown of Astoria. This bistro/coffee shop has delicious food and they care just as much as their coffee as they do about their food. Sporting a strong La Marzocco and a Stumptown bean they make a mean cup of coffee. I would not say this is the greatest place to hang out in Astoria. It is more of a sit and have brunch type of place, but a can’t miss on the coffee!

I only heard about this place an hour before I had to leave town, so I did not get a chance to hang out there long. Which really sucks, because I loved it. Really cool place, with lot’s of light, interesting layout and really nice people (I guess that is redundant since we are in Canada.) They have a strong machine, good barista’s and very good coffee. If this was Seattle, it would have a hard time lifting with the heavyweights, but for Saskatoon this is a great choice.

There was a lot of hype around this place. Everyone in town told me I would like it and it has the look of a great shop. Cool layout, lot’s of interesting people and great light, but the coffee itself did not hold up to the local hype. It was mediocre and not very flavorful. For being a roaster I expect more. They have good food there and is a decent place to hang out. Beware though, they have a “one hour hang policy” that requires you to spend more money if you want to stay longer. I am not a big fan of that, but understand why it exists. I would recommend to go to a different place for coffee, but if you want to hang out in a cool spot for an hour, this will suffice.
