Urbanground Coffee House

Posted on 27 September 2012 by mattbaker

Swift Current, SK S9H 0K9, Canada

Urban Ground Coffeehouse is a little sanctuary in the middle of a big shit pile. I don’t want to say Swift Current sucks, I mean to say it really sucks. Urban Ground is where everyone goes to hang and get some decent coffee. I have had many cups of coffee there and it always ranges in quality. I have a pretty good cup there, but more often then not it is very average. The food selection is limited, but they do have internet and a steady stream of people coming in and out. The most important thing is not the quality of the coffee, but that there is a decent place in this frozen tundra.

Wandering Goat

268 Madison Street
Eugene, OR 97402

Review -

This place is very interesting. It is located in the Whiteaker district, which is the more loose neighborhood in Eugene. They roast a great bean and they certainly know what they are doing. When they want to, they make a really great drink. However, the vibe there sometimes can be this righteous hippy vegan thing. It’s the only place I have to specifically ask for “cow milk” because they assume everyone wants soy, goat, or breast milk in their drinks. Since I grew up here, I find it hilarious, but some people might not understand why the hippy’s are judging them for using animal products. Just be prepared for a little bit of anarchy and dreadlocked bearded dudes pulling your shots. Note: The hair in the coffee does not cost extra.

Cafe Perugino

Posted on 26 September 2012 by mattbaker

767 Willamette Street
Eugene, OR 97401

Review -

When Perugino opened, it was the best coffee in town and the quality was great. However, over the years the quality has deteriorated and you never know what you are going to get when you are there. The machine is nice, and I have had amazing drinks there, but the inconsistency is a little hard to take. On top of that, it feels very yuppy and breeds a lot of people who look like they just came from there condo in Aspen. With Turkish rugs for sale on the wall for more then I make in a year, I could see how this might alienate some people. However, If you are looking to have a nice coffee chat with a friend this is the place to meet them. Decent food, but a little overpriced.

Perk

Eugene, OR 97401

Review -

Perk is relatively new and very small. However, they employ one of the best barista’s in the Northwest. They use a very tasty bean, and the barista’s are on their game. It is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the hunt. It’s small, but very intimate which in my opinion adds to it’s awesomness. This is your best bet in Eugene and if you are there when Okon is working, be prepared for one of the best cups of coffee you will ever have.

Full City Coffee

Posted on 26 September 2012 by mattbaker

842 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 97401

Review -

I always look at Full City as the workingman’s coffee. With a few around town my favorite is on Pearl St. This one is located in the heart of downtown Eugene right next to all the city buildings, this place caters to people on the go. That does not mean the quality is compromised. They pull a decent shot. Not the best in Eugene, but certainly not going to dissapoint. They are also connected to a real good bakery that has some tastry treats to snack on. If you are looking for a place to hang out, talk with friends or get work done, this is not the place. The space is small and they specialize in volume. Get your coffee and walk over to the fountain across the street.

The Beanery

Posted on 26 September 2012 by mattbaker

152 West 5th St
Eugene, OR 97401

Review -

I grew up in Eugene and before I had any appreciation for decent coffee, this was the spot. However, since I have come to appreciate quality in my espresso, this place is terrible. The coffee is almost always scorched to hell and you can’t even really taste the coffee. To make matters even worse for themselves, they have switched around names of drinks. A “mocha” is chocolate mixed with drip coffee. And a regular mocha is called a “beanery.” I don’t understand the thought process behind this. Whoever made that decision should have been focusing on making good coffee instead of making “cute” names for their shitty drinks. The sad part about this place, is a lot of people go there. Mostly teenagers and college kids hang out there because it is a cool place to study and get work done. I would highly recommend “not” to go to this place unless all other coffee shops are closed down and there is no more sewer water to drink.

Review -

This is a funky little place a block from the beach. It is more of a lunch spot specializing in great big slices of bready pizza, but don’t be fooled, this place has great coffee. It might not be the thing they focus on, but they have a good Wega machine and they can make a good cup. The space is so small, there is not really anywhere to drink it. But, you are a block from the beach so why hang out inside anyways? Don’t forget to grab a slice of that heady pizza to!

Missoula, MT 59802

Review -

This is a huge space right in downtown Missoula. It is almost to much space. It feels like if someone is across the room they are in another county. They have 20 ft ceilings, a stage, event guides and a really friendly staff. Not having high expectations after looking at their machine, but they pulled me two decent shots that I was very happy with. This is a great place to be quite and study and that is what most of their customers are doing. OK food, but I would say there has to be a better place in town.

LAMILL Coffee

1636 Silver Lake Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90026

Review -

LAMILL is nestled in a convenient spot in the hipster haven of Silver Lake. Let’s face it, if you are a coffee aficionado, this is a must stop along your coffee life path. With a gold plated La Marzocco and a culture that makes you feel like coffee is what is really important in the universe this place delivers on multiple levels. The food is fantastic and the culture is what every coffee shop should be. If you have your coffee in, they seat you and serve you up one of the dozens of fantastic drinks they offer. A simple layout, with a murals of ancient Greece decorating the walls, LAMILL is setting the bar high for all coffee shops in Silver Lake. This is a “All System Must Go.”

Groundwork Coffee

Posted on 26 September 2012 by mattbaker

671 Rose Avenue
Venice, CA

Review -

There are a few of these around town, but I really like the one in Venice. Groundworks in Venice is a cool brick place with a funky outside seating area and a real rooty feel to it. With drawers upon drawers of different blends of coffee to choose from, this coffee shop has all the essentials to fill your coffee urge. However this place is another example of Urbanspoon letting me down. This was the highest rated coffee shop in Venice, rated 10% higher then the far superior Intellegencia. This place delivers a pretty good cup, but does not deserve the top spot in the venice coffee totem pole. If you are looking for the best this is not it, but they do have a La Marzocco, double shot policy and a pretty cool staff. You won’t be let down with the quality and it has a nice community vibe to it with lot’s of smiles and small talk that is missing from so many shops. Have a seat, watch the celebrities come and go and enjoy some delicious coffee.
